Gay communities’ legal journey portrays the strength best in human and the bond of advocacy shared by the society. Founded of course, same sex relationship the culture of most history and it is not preferred or acceptable that two individuals of the same sex can be in a relationship or in a marriage hence gay and lesbian were forced to hide most of their history. This repression resulted in establishing clandestine sites where persons could fellowship, familiarize themselves with other persons in similar situations, and organize themselves for support. They were so central in a world where homosexuality was outlawed and the homosexual was regarded as a deviant.
While in early 20th century, homosexual bars and parties or rather parties and gathering became the survival point for the Gay, lesbians and bisexuals. Nevertheless, these places were whorlped by the authorities, but they remained shelters. Each year, small outrages started to bring together a more general revolt. Nevertheless, the riots in New York of 1969 known as the Stonewall riots initiated the modern fight for gay rights. These riots were resulted from police brutality and racial profiling, and mobilized by the most oppressed citizens of society, the black trans women.
The period that came after Stonewall was marked by development of groups of advocates, including the Gay Liberation Front who advocated for visibility and then for equality. Being the gay liberation movement was also the period of misfortune and action in response to misfortune – the period of AIDS tragedy. It was groups such as ACT UP not only fought for change in healthcare system but also against homophobia in the society.
However, as the demand for equality and rights of the representatives of the LGBTQ+ society increased, cultural representation evolved. The stereotypical portrayal of gay characters in films were replaced with real depiction in literature and this was also reflected on television. Legal landmarks emerged next in the move, in many countries, towards decriminalising homosexual relationships as well as the matter of recognising same-sex marriages.
Modern gay populations live in a culture that is gradually becoming much more tolerant, but some barriers still exist. What was once a protest is now an annually advancing celebration: Pride Parades. Gay villages and other online platforms offer opportunities for people to socialize, and get together, which has been a secret endeavor in the past.
Nevertheless, the progress is quite far from over. LGBTQ+ persons to date continue to suffer discrimination, acts of violence, and even legal prosecution all over the world. LGBTQ people are still struggling for equity and equality and the first to feel its impact are those living in parts of the world where homosexuality is criminalized. Various organizations are fighting for these questions, so that the achievements in some countries are transferred to the international level.
The transition of gay communities from the closet to public acceptances is in harmony with other social transformations. It emphasizes awareness and support, cardinality, and support needed to overcome discrimination and promote global tolerance. Those who bravely stormed the society in adversative eras which prepared the ground for later generations have shown that change is within the grasp of people when everybody has the right to demand it. With that we look ahead, it is imperative for the State to continue to recognize and reclaim these victories while actively continue to fight against those challenges in the quest for total transformation of the society for the better.
